Who we are
History of the SBAJ
The Small Business Association of Jamaica (SBAJ) is a voluntary, not-for-profit membership organisation that was formed in November 1974 to give a voice to small businesses of the day.
Founded by Granville Dixon and Lester Kircaldy, the group started as with the Small Business Development Centre to conduct training and seminars for start-up companies. Other participants decided to form a steering committee to establish the SBAJ. Among them were Abe Williams, the first elected president; A.B. Stone, the second president; Clive Lindo, Daphne Graham, Leslie-Ann Terrelonge and others. All had a common goal in developing a strong private sector to improve the standard of start-up businesses, thereby improving themselves and creating more jobs through individual, group efforts and creativity. The SBAJ started out with membership composed mainly of small manufacturers with a few members from the service industries.
